Trans-Oil Group Addresses Natural Gas and Electricity Supply Situation in Moldova
02.01.2025
Trans-Oil Group acknowledges the recent developments surrounding the natural gas and electricity supply challenges in the Republic of Moldova. These circumstances have raised concerns across various industries and among the public.
The Moldovan Government has assured that the country has sufficient natural gas reserves to meet its consumption needs until the end of the heating season (March 2025). However, due to the halt of Russian natural gas transit through Ukraine's gas transportation system, effective 1 January 2025, the Republic of Moldova has stopped receiving electricity from MGRES, a power plant located in the transnistrian region.
To address this, the Moldovan Government has secured over 70% of the country’s electricity needs through a combination of:
-
Internal production by local power plants, covering up to 40% of demand.
-
Renewable energy sources, meeting up to 18% of needs.
-
Supply agreements with Nuclearelectrica, Romania’s nuclear energy company, providing up to 12% of required electricity.
These sources are currently sufficient to meet the energy needs of the country’s population and businesses. The remaining shortfall could be addressed through electricity supply from OMV's power plant in Brazi, Romania, and Complexul Energetic Oltenia, Romania, as well as purchases from spot markets via the ENTSO-E mechanism.

Despite these challenges, Trans-Oil Group foresees no significant impact on its operations in Moldova.
